JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title:  Student Assistance Program Coordinator  (SAP) 

Description:  The SAP Coordinator is responsible for providing community and/or school-based student assistance program services to the school community.   Primary responsibility is to provide substance abuse (ATOD:  alcohol, tobacco and other drugs) prevention, screening, intervention, referral and after-care services.  This position will primarily work Monday through Friday 9:30-5:30 with students in grades 6–8 at Campton Elementary School in Campton, New Hampshire.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, human services or a related field and one year experience in teaching or human service work.  Minimum education of a bachelor’s degree; masters preferred.

  • Knowledge of adolescent development

  • Ability to work with children and adolescents and committed to assisting students in making healthy choices through knowledge and awareness of alcohol, tobacco and other drug use.

  • Familiarity with abused substances, abuse prevention, intervention, treatment and recovery.

  • Ability to facilitate small groups and large group sessions. 

  • Ability to provide prevention education in a classroom setting.

  • Ability to complete documentation in an accurate and timely manner.

  • Ability to work independently, use sound judgment and creative thinking.

  • Ability to work cooperatively with school staff and outside agencies.

  • Works closely with students, parents, school administrators, and community members.

  • Communicates in a professional, sensitive and helpful manner in order to discuss differences of perspectives in a mutually respectful and sensitive way.

  • Knowledge of boundary issues, as well as human and civil rights and the importance of confidentiality regarding the persons served.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Strategies for Implementation:

  • Giving students information to increase their understanding about the harmful consequences of using ATOD

  • Helping students understand that most teens don’t use ATOD

  • Providing services to students who are experiencing stress (such as relationship issues, friend’s substance use, etc) that if not resolved might lead to substance use.

  • Teaching students skills for resisting peer pressure, responding to conflicts, managing anger, and avoiding and coping with other stressful situations.

  • Referring students, and their families who need additional help, to services in the school and community.

  • Working with school and community groups on activities to promote AOTD free lifestyles for teens.

The Coordinator will work with middle school students individually and in small groups; conduct classroom presentations; train and consult on prevention issues with school staff and refer and follow up with students and families needing additional services.  

Program Components:  

The following activities will be utilized:

  • Implement the Prevention Education Series.

  • Provide individual and group sessions.

  • Promote school wide awareness and outreach activities.

  • Engage with parent and community organizations.

  • Referrals with outside agencies and partners.

Salary: $40,000- $50,000 As per negotiated contract depending on experience (this is a non-benefited Grant funded school year position.)
